Yarralumla Nursery - Finalist in the 2019 Chief Minister's Inclusion Awards

Yarralumla Nursery is a finalist for Inclusion in Public Sector Employment at the 2019 Chief Minister’s Inclusion Awards!

The Yarralumla Nursery is an ACT Government owned wholesale nursery that grows plants for the public realm, retail nurseries and landscape industry within the ACT and surrounding regions. The Yarralumla Nursery has provided work for a supported team of five supported workers from Koomarri and a permanent officer with disability for over thirty years.

In 2018-19, up to six students from Black Mountain School - Canberra attended a work experience program at the Nursery one day per week during school terms and a further six people with disability undertook work experience or volunteered.

Most Yarralumla Nursery staff members have attended disability awareness training and actively participate in supporting people with disability in completing tasks, and learning horticultural skills and teamwork. Working in this safe, caring and supportive environment has also set up the foundations for future career paths - the Nursery is seeing students and volunteers gain confidence to apply for employment elsewhere.
