Call for Expressions of Interest

Expressions of Interest are sought from highly motivated persons with suitable qualifications and/or experience for appointment as Official Visitor for the purposes of the Mental Health Act 2015

The role of Official Visitor for Mental Health is to visit vulnerable people in visitable places in supported accommodation and residential age care and to inquire into and resolve complaints.

Official Visitors liaise and work closely with Government and non-Government Senior Management, provide quarterly written reports to Ministers and ensure that operations are in accordance with the provisions of the Mental Health Act 2015.

An Official Visitor must possess well-developed liaison and communication skills and have the capacity and willingness to communicate empathetically with people in challenging situations. An understanding of the ACT’s disability, mental health and aged care system would be valuable.

High standards of integrity, impartiality and objectivity are required as is an understanding of the processes for resolving grievances and a sound understanding of the ACT Human Rights Act 2004.

Official Visitors need to command the continuing respect and confidence of relevant stakeholders and the community.

Appointment will be based on individual expertise and suitability and not as a representative of an organisation. Appointments are for a period of up to three years.

Remuneration is determined by the ACT Remuneration Tribunal and the current Part-time Public Office Holder Determination can be found at the Remuneration Tribunal’s website: www.remunerationtribunal.act.gov.au/determinations

Current employees of the Public Service are not eligible to apply for the position of Official Visitor.
