Call for Expressions of Interest
Expressions of Interest are sought from highly motivated persons with suitable qualifications and/or experience for appointment as Official Visitor under the Official Visitor Act 2012 (the Act) in multiple vacancies arising over the coming twelve months.
Official Visitors are appointed to visit people in ‘visitable places’ in the ACT including -
• Children and Young People - youth detention facilities and places of residential care for children and young people
• Corrections - adult correctional centres
• Disability - supported accommodation for people with disabilities
• Mental Health - mental health facilities/community housing
• Homelessness - homelessness services.
The Act requires the appointment of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person for the purposes of the Corrections Management Act 2007 and the Children and Young People Act 2008.
The role of Official Visitors is to assess the conditions and quality of services at visitable places and to inquire into and resolve complaints. Official Visitors are independent and provide quarterly written reports to relevant Ministers.
Applicants must possess well-developed liaison and communication skills and have the capacity and willingness to communicate empathetically with people in challenging situations. An understanding of the relevant legislation and the ACT Human Rights framework is highly desirable.
Current employees of the ACT Government Public Service are not eligible to apply for the position of Official Visitor.
Appointments will be for a period of up to three years.
