Accessible Tourism - community discussion
Wed 24 Mar 2021, 10:30am - 12:30pm 17/9 Beaconsfield street
Fyshwick

or online through Zoom. Inclusive and accessible communities
Join us as for a community discussion as we explore whether accessible tourism could play a key role in tourism recovery in Canberra.
COVID-19 has had a major impact on the tourism industry. It has affected businesses across the sector from events and activities to accommodation establishments, venues, retail businesses, arts and recreation and hospitality.
Uncertainty around international borders and lockdowns has made travel planning difficult and domestic and local tourism is likely to be the lifeblood for these small businesses for the foreseeable future.

Dr Yasmine Gray is the guest speaker

What will we talk about?
• What is Universal Design and could ‘designing for all’ play a critical role in tourism’s restart post-COVID?
• Is there a business case? How big is the market? How do we encourage Canberrans to experience their own city and support local businesses?
• What are the drivers of and barriers to implementing Universal Design principles in Canberra’s small businesses?
• What are the needs of people with disabilities, their families and carers?
• Does understanding the needs of visitors with a disability provide potential for innovation?
• What changes or additional information might be required to best communicate with this market?
• What deals or offers could be created for those visiting with a carer?
• How do you ensure the process is user-friendly from booking to transport, accommodation and activities?

Who should take part?
This community discussion group brings together people in Canberra from a range of perspectives relevant to the topic under discussion – businesses, people working in the industry, consumers, family and carers.
A guest speaker will introduce the topic and a facilitator will encourage discussion and participation from the group. The inspiration for this format of event comes from the Medici family, who in 15th century Italy were instrumental in bringing together scientists, poets, artists and architects in the town of Florence. Here they swapped ideas, learned from each other, and collaborated. This brought about one of the most creative and innovative periods in history - the Renaissance.

How to get involved?
You can attend in person at 17/9 Beaconsfield street, Fyshwick or online through Zoom.

Cost: Free
