Connections in the community

Policy Direction 1.1 of the National Disability Strategy 2010-2020 is Increased participation of people with disability, their families and carers in the social, cultural, religious, recreational and sporting life of the community.

Barriers to access play a big role in the lower rates of participation of people with disability in community activities. This can lead to a lack of connection and to social isolation and loneliness.

However, there are a range of recreational, sporting, social, cultural and special interest groups and organisations that provide accessible and inclusive opportunities to participate in the community. Some are listed on this page. Refer to Further information below for more ideas of places to discover the local activities and opportunities that interest you.

Connect and Participate Expo Stallholders (2019)

The Connect and Participate (CAP) Expo has been an annual inclusive community event for all ages and abilities, showcasing the range of opportunities available in the ACT region to join groups and build social connections around common interests. People attended the Expo to participate in the many ‘Come and Try’ activities on offer, or simply talk with people representing groups to find out what they might be interested in.

The sixth and final CAP Expo was held on Saturday, 4 May 2019 at the Kingston Former Transport Depot. A wide variety of social clubs, sporting clubs, arts and hobby groups and community organisations were gathered together for an interactive day, with live music and dance performances, food and stalls showing displays.

This is a list of the diverse groups that attended to host a stall at the 2019 CAP Expo (in alphabetical order):
